Kindles can download directly of Amazon when you need to get a DRM encumbered book from them, thus bypassing the need to use a PC (Win, Mac, Linux, ...).
Also, once you have a registered Kindle device, you can purchase a book using your PC's browser and have it download to the PC. If the book is DRM encumbered it will be configured for the specific device you specify at purchase time. This is an option not visible on their site until you have registered a device, not app, to your account. The downloaded ebook can then be copied to the device over USB on any OS that supports the MASS Storage standard.
