I used to moderate an electronic forum devoted to SF. Topic drift was both frequent and expected, and I made little effort to direct it. I viewed the forum as the electronic equivalent of the SF conventions I attend and help to plan and run. People at those gathering can and do talk about
everything. I just treated them like Little Bo Peep's lost sheep - "leave them alone and they'll come home, wagging their tales behind them", and so they did.
