@rainbowdash: Broken font (well, not exactly, but well). Enable an FT override or switch the font. (Also, read the first post, it's explained in detail in there).
There's a background process that detects (and apply) ota updates just before the Kindle goes to sleep, I never bothered to check if it would pick up custom updates, but apparently, it does ;D.
