For the update button to be enabled, you need to have a update .bin file signed with an installed key. Because we cannot sign update packages using the official amazon key, we use our own "jailbreak" key.

You need an update package signed for your kindle model, and you need the jailbreak key installed. When things do not work, it is a good idea to reboot and try again. Some procedures require two reboots to work (one to install a payload, and another to run the payload).

For a Kindle 3, there are DIFFERENT update packages depending on your firmware versions. For firmware version 3.3, be sure to use update packages for firmware 3.2.1 and later, or the update button will not be enabled.
