Jumping into a Linux VFS (virtual file system) problem is not the recommended way to start learning Linux.
Well, you sure got me interested, I just got "Linux for Dummies" Kindle version of course.

I really do appreciate your help - thank you very much I was ready to give up.

As for your suggestion re: newbies, it seems to me that even a hint of a faint and vague understanding of what one is doing is necessary, even if I personally happened on the "solution" by chance. I followed a cookbook approach first, it didn't work, and that's how I wound up reading all those threads and stickies, and eventually signing up.

I can get feeling a bit irritated too.
