Hmm...
So the only problem was that the auto-mounting and starting (or offering to start) of Banshee mis-lead the O.P. into thinking the Kindle wasn't recognized as a file system.
And...
My comment that the *nix system might offer to open a file browser was overly specific.

@orbiting: The same thing is "under the hood" of your Linux/Mint as "under the hood" of your Linux/Kindles.

A major difference (other than GUI) is your Linux/Mint has the man(ual) command and documentation pages installed.
Just remember, on any *nix system man(ual) is your friend.
man mount
man umount
