Checking for file metadata after it's imported

Is there a way, preferably without using a plugin, to check to see if a file has metadata after it's been imported into Calibre?

For example:

The 'Read metadata from file...' is unclicked in Preferences so when I import my book it gets the title and author from the filename. However I happen to know that the file has a description and tags stored in the metadata. This info wasn't imported though because Calibre was told not to look in the file for metadata.

So once it's imported is there a way to look in the file for that metadata without having to reimport it with 'Read metadata from file..' clicked which would download the title and author versions I didn't want?
