what I meant to say is: maybe it's just a bug in white mode, e.g. highlight color is not taken from xml file but is hard coded, I don't know. If this is the case, you could alternatively change sephia background to white and sephia highlight to grey,
Also: try a darker grey for the highlight color -> maybe #ff666666 is just too light for the reader... (or too evil and #ff777777 will magically turn it into color eInk *scnr*)
