I don't keep all that much in my pantry. Just a three month supply of cat and dog food, same amount of kitty litter, lots of toilet tissue and paper towels, oh and laundry detergent.

I seldom cook .... thus, most of the time, even if I had something in the fridge, it would likely not be fresh anymore. So, whenever I cook, I just assume that I'm going to toss out whatever is in the pantry. And, really, it's more baking than cooking.

I don't do it often because I live by myself. My baked goods have won awards ... but I'm not even going to try to eat an entire cheesecake by myself. So, now I bake whenever there is a neighborhood party (mostly those of us who live in the valley ... most of the folks up on the ridge are snobs of the first order).

I don't even keep the circuit breakers on for half of the appliances in the kitchen (I mean, really ... who the hell needs two stoves, two refridgerators, a separate ice maker .... it's a bit much, you know??)

Man .... I can really over think an answer!!
