Making something the right price sells it. That's what he's doing.
However, to turn against my own argument slightly, there is a business case to be be made for pricing FUTURE books at $2.99, because Amazon gives a far bigger royalty share at $2.99...that's when it jumps from 30% to 70%.
You'll make more money by selling to fewer people...but you WILL sell to to fewer people. If the goal is to get a fan base. 99 cents is the right price.
For a first book, free might even be better.
