It isn't without its critics, but I would rank it as Gaiman's magnum opus. It shows a depth of knowledge regarding mythologies and pantheons that boggles my mind, and the ominous tone is classic Neil. I guess eventually I won't be able to suggest it as a stand-alone, because Gaiman has indicated that he's working on a sequel.

As it is,
Anansi Boys is supposed to be a sequel of sorts, though not in the normal sense.
