Floaters... cellular debris in the fluid of the eye. They can appear as black spots, transparent wiggly "threads", blurry masses, etc. that appear to cross the field of vision. Most noticeable when you close your eyes in a bright room.
Nearly everyone has them to some degree, and they rarely cause anything more than a mild temporary distraction. Some people, though, have a LOT of them, like me. A continual, moving screen of spots and threads and blotches.
I've had them forever. I thought once, when I was kid, that I could write a story about a universe, and the surprise ending was that it was in my eyeball! Then I read a short story about a man who wakes up to find a civilization has sprouted up on his hand... who wrote that, btw? Anyone remember? So, yeah, it's been done.
