I would say that it is something built by PB themselves since the GUI is based on libInkview. I vaguely remember looking for the source code last year, but couldn't find it. So, I think something completely new would be required as a replacement.

As far as coming up with something better, it wouldn't be easy if it used the inkview library, as well. There is no file chooser in the GUI; only a directory chooser. There is also no way to pick multiple objects with any of the existing dialogs. So, I think the best would be a new app that you could pick a directory with and then start playing all the music files inside. Maybe madplay could be cross-compiled for playing the music. It can be arbitrarily started at any point in time in a collection of music, and shows how much time elapsed when you stop it playing, so picking up at the same place in an audiobook shouldn't be too hard to program.
