If a paperback in B&N costs about $7 on average now with the middlemen getting most of it and only a small portion going to the author, why wouldn't I jump at the chance to pay $5 directly to the author for a DRM-free electronic copy?
I'm getting the same book at a discount and DRM-free. Plus I'm paying the author for his work more directly (my understanding is that while paper books give <20% to the author I've heard that Amazon was >70%).
The value is there, I don't need to be cheap. Authors have to eat too. I'd use the tip jar if he had one, I enjoyed his book!
