Favourite Anime... that you would recommend
While going over the Favourite Movies thread started by RickyMaveety I've seen quiet a few recommendations for Anime films.
While everyone may not be fond of Anime , there are quiet a few great Anime series. I'm more familiar with older series then more recent stuff as I don't have cable at my current place so I though I might drop a few names and see anybody find them interesting and get some recommendations for new stuff that I really should watch watch.
One thing is that I generally prefer Subtitles to the Dubbed version, as I feel that even when the subtitles are funny, or not done very well, you do get better idea of the characters in the original language.
I've always been fond of Rumiko Takahashi work, though I do prefer the manga in some cases.
Ranma 1/2 is classic Slapstick situation comedy, but not something you can take very seriously. Its good for a few laughs. One caveat that the Manga is tons better, and the characters ar somewhat better developed there.
Urusei Yatsura is similar in some ways but does explore some issues a little bit more seriously at times.
InuYasha is standard fantasy, with comedy elements thrown in.
I'm also very fond of Masaki Kajishima's Tenchi Muyo series.
The OVA series explores quiet a few different issues, and the the others are also a lot of fun. Though keeping track of continuity between the different series is quiet impossible at times.
CLAMP Gakuen Tanteiden, better know as CLAMP School Detectives is also a good series, a bit childish at times, but still sweet.
Ghost in the Shell is a Classic in my opinion and a definite must see.
Hellsing is also a definate must see, thought it is quiet gory so be warned.
Slayers is another classic, and the amount of material present can lead to months of entertainment. The difficulty can be getting a hold of all the different series.
Lost Universe by the same creator is also interesting, but does seema bit derivitive at times.
Sister Princess is another sweet series, very girly in some ways, but still enjoyable by all.
Ah! My Goddess - Love the manga and the original 5 Episodes and the Movie were great. Have not seen the complete series, but am lookinng forward to doing so. Its Spin off Series, The Mini Goddesses is hilarious and worth a see, but keep in mind that a lot of will nat make sense until you read the Manga or see the original series.
Love Hina, again a good slapstick comedy, one which does however deal with serious issues quiet often.
Kazemakaze Tsukikage Ran - Interesting series about a female samurai in medieval Japan. If you enjoy that era, then
Rurouni Kenshin also known as Samuri X is a must see. Qhiet bloody at times, especially the original japanese version as opposed to the dubbed american release, it is still a very intresting and deals with that era of history quiet well, not being black or white, but lookinng at the different shades of grey.
No mention of anime can get away wiyhout a mention of the grandaddy of Macross.
Macross Zero was good, but also some what confusiing, especially if the only version of macross you are familer with is the version in Robotech. However the Fights are superb, and the story intresting so worth a look.
New Getter Robot, the remade version of the original Getter Robot is not bad, but I do miss the original version that was part of the Force Five Time slot on TV.
Dragonball Is alway there, but went on for too long IMHO.
