I agree - it's awful seeing someone in a relationship like that and not being able to intervene, much as you want to. Of course, bullies like that always manage to find someone who will be compliant and think they deserve to be bullied.
Someone we know was in a marriage like that but with her family's help, managed to get herself and two young children away from him. She had a lot of counselling and has now turned herself right round, to the extent of being happily remarried and with a new baby. So it can turn out well but it takes a huge amount of courage and support.
Sadly, where a victim manages to get away, the bully just goes out and finds a new person to mistreat. Presumably such a person has pretty low self-esteem him/herself and so needs someone to treat badly.
Great work, Witty - you definitely struck a blow against the putdowns and showed her she can do things. Now if only she realises that if he was wrong about one thing, he could well be wrong about other things he says about her ...
I do hope so.
