I understand. Point being is that many owners couldn't get the update to start even on a working eDGe. It took some literally dozens of times (e.g. see posts # 18 and # 19 in this thread:

In other words you don't know whether it is updating or not because of a blank screen, but assume that the update didn't start and try some of the things other owners did (e.g. different SD card, USB thumb drive, or another OS download). You never know you might hit upon the right combination and the update might start up the screen.
A couple of questions:
Is there a blinking cursor in the right hand corner of the screen when you first power on?
Do you have a USB drive with a LED indicator? If it blinks rapidly when attempting an update this would at least let you know the eDGe is trying to read the update file and there is another problem.
Also, cables on many hinged devices like laptops can become slightly unseated over time. Take a look at
photo # 15 from the link in my previous post and you will see several different cable connections to the main board.
