I need to vent

Our apartment building was recently bought by another company. I have a lease that expires in December and found out that these new people want anyone over 30 with kids out of the building. They want it to become more high-end and less family oriented. And of course they want to be able to charge a heck of a lot more for rent than what we pay now as pretty much low income families.

Yesterday I came home to find a notice in my mailbox from the owners demanding that we all pay them $250 for every air conditioner in our apartments and that we can't have an air conditioner over 8000BTUs.

Now, I live on the top floor right beside the boiler room and let me tell you, it's freakin hot in my apartment. My air conditioner is 10,000BTU and it barely makes a dent. I still need another 2 units before the real hot weather hits. I have 2 kids and a huge 3 bedroom apartment, which costs me every cent I have to keep.

I could not believe the audacity of these people DEMANDING that we pay them $250 per unit. They even put in bold letter on the notice that : THIS IS MANDATORY. Yeah, whatever. I called the Landlord and Tenant Board of Ontario and was told by the customer service rep that neither I or any other tenant that has been there since before the sale of building have to pay ANYTHING to these people if we never agreed to it upon signing our lease. I've personally been living in the building for 6 years this June. And have had an air conditioner in my window every single year.

So I did what any decent person would do and I made my own damn notice telling all the tenants in the building that they don't have to pay these idiots a dime if they already have a lease from the old owners, even if it's expired. I added the phone number for the Landlord and Tenant board so they can confirm and I really hope the tenants don't let these jerks run all over them. I'm going to put my notice in everyones mailbox and hope I'm not too late and that nobody has already gone to pay them this ridiculous fee. They DEMANDED that it be made by May 15th. A lot of the tenants don't speak english very well and may not know how to fight back.
