Before 1752, the New Year was on March 25th. Also the calendar used in England and its colonies was 11 days out-of-sync with the Gregorian Calendar. When they decided to re-sync the calendar with the Sun they also moved the start of the year to January 1st. Getting the calendar in sync actually took a couple steps. So--

December 31, 1750 followed by January 1, 1750 (Jan. was the 10th month)
March 24, 1750 followed by March 25, 1751 (Mar. 25th was the New Year)
December 31, 1751 followed by January 1, 1752 (1st change)
September 2, 1752 followed by September 14, 1752 (2nd change dropped 11 days)
