Calibre crashing in Ubuntu 12.04

A couple of weeks ago I upgraded my Ubuntu install to the latest 12.04 64 bit. Since then I have been having problems with Calibre crashing when doing a bulk edit of metadata e.g. after adding 20 books, selecting all and then doing an "Add cover from ebook files". It has also occured when adding a large pdf book. I previously had no problems with these tasks.
The error message that shows in the terminal is "Segmentation fault (core dumped)"
When Calibre is restarted I can then repeat whatever task caused it to crash and it will complete properly.
Calibre was version .8.49 binary install when the problem first occured and has continued with .8.50.
I have also noticed that after restarting, any changes to settings/preferences made during the session when it crashes will have reverted to the previous state.
Any thoughts on what may be causing this?
