I don't know if the Google Books button on the T1 ever worked in the UK. However, in the US, it accessed the public domain books on Google and not the for-sale books. Google recently restructured their bookstore. Now, you have to download books (whether public domain or for-sale) through "Google Play" which is Google's new digital media store for books, music, videos and Android apps. Sony disabled the button on the T1 and eliminated the links to Google at their e-bookstore when Google Play went live.
