You verified it? As in, YOU knew in advance whether it was present or missing?

Perhaps a better choice would be to have (assuming you have them) your husband put it in a drawer and your teenager go into the room with a box just before bedtime and decide whether to take it out or leave it by flipping a coin. Don't see or talk to your teenager for any reason after this so that there won't be any subtle clues, then try to sleep. Next morning record your experiences, but don't share them. Then have your teenager go back into the room and either pretend to or actually replace the reader before you take it out. Do this every night for two weeks. I would bet big money that you'd find that there is NO correlation between your sleep and the presence or absence of the device.

(the flaw with this approach being, of course, that a teenager is likely to bang pans at 3:00 am every time they leave the reader in the room. :-) )
