They didn't. It was a seasonal brew with higher caramelization and a different recipe, yielding a darker hue. But the urban legend was prominent...
I haven't had Vegemite. I've had Spam. It's actually tasty cooked in a dutch oven over a campfire with some slices of canned pineapple in front of your tent when you are out camping, and inedible otherwise. I
do like beer.
