It has to do with the distribution rights (which is why you need the VPN in the first place). But once you are connected it doesn't really make any difference for the people who produced the film or show, nor for Netflix or Hulu. (So the content producers he was worried about are covered.) Because you count as one additional user. You MAY be of no use as a target for the advertisers, yes. Then again, it may be a product that is sold worldwide.
