At level 4, Radiation Shields give you nearly as good a yield as L1 Open Pit Mines per surge point and take up less space and provide you with considerably more Bucks per cycle income. Plus when upgraded to level 5, the yield readily beats the mines. Stack them all along your Quick Charge squares so you can surge them every 8 hours instead of 16.
Also, invest in an Antimatter Reactor citycore, if your political alignment lets you buy it. Surround it with enough high-cycle-income-producing Pop and Bliss-producing assets so that it won't surge those, and you'll get 1000 Energy and 500 of everything else for only 4 surge points. If you stick them in the two right-hand side corners, then you'll be able to maximize your yield while minimizing how much clear space you need when you upgrade them.
If you already have a Factory Town citycore as part of your original drop package, try to put the Antimatter core near it so that it can share overlapped assets. It's also got a pretty good yield of stuff per surge point, as long as you keep Population and Bliss production suppressed.
I'm currently at 97,000+ Energy with 4000 Pop from mostly doing this.
