That term was coined because a lot of backlist eBooks were made via scanning a paper edition since no electronic version exists. But in the case of what I have been reading, it seems that a very poor electronic source does exist...PDF. So in
White Knight, the italics and smallcaps here a nightmare. I have found that when Textcafe's PDF2XML is used, italics and smallcaps generally get screwed up. I have never seen a perfect PDF to anything else conversion and the publisher is at fault for allowing poorly made eBooks going to be sold.
