I'm not sure I follow you here. As far as I can make out, size of your own alliance doesn't matter at all, only people who you have joined. For example I have joined 20 people, 14 among them are allies. I have 23 allies, 10 of them joined by me. Second alliance book came as soon as I joined 20th person.
And I can't agree that they paid well, especially if they are still only starting the game.
Joining is so expensive now that I rather get new names added to the short list. Makes it easier to keep an eye out for progress and to find when I go looking where to place the gifts.
Of course, if I'm mistaken, I'll start joining back ASAP.
