If you open up a purchased KF8 you'll find an entry with the following info line:

<!-- The following meta tags are just for information and will be ignored by mobigen/kindlegen. -->

Below this are a number of entries, one of which will be:

<meta name="CDE Type" content="EBOK" /> (or "EBSP" if it's a sample)

This seems to be what determines whether the Fire displays the file under Books or Docs, since adding or changing the EXTH 501 entry to include "EBOK" makes no difference.

Unfortunately, there seems to be no way to add this line manually, as Kindlegen removes it if you add it to your epub source file, and I can find no way to edit a KF8 mobi without extracting the archive and repacking, which removes the entry. Calibre will add the line to mobi conversions, but it does not yet handle fixed layout KF8.

Does anyone know a way to do this that circumvents Kindlegen?
