They're almost all vintage pulp fiction from the 50s-70s, reprinted by F+W/Adams Media's Prologue Books imprint. There's a
freebie to try which is one of their weekly offerings here.
They do put up a banner on the cover if a book's an award-winner, and you can google or check the author's name at Wikipedia (if applicable) to see if they've gotten acclaim in the past. For example, William Campbell Gault is an Edgar Award-winner and has a
Wikipedia entry. And a couple of his things are public domain in the US, as well.
So at least that would give you a starting point for which authors may be the more prominent/hopefully better quality ones to read the samples of first, and which of their books to spend money upon if in the States and can dip into their public domain.
