The reality is that people who didn't already have an e-ink Kindle probably saw a tablet that was drastically cheaper than and ipad that could also read books, play movies etc and went for one of those instead.

Prior to the Kindle Fire, tablets were not selling, ipads were selling, but the tablet market as a whole had not taken off at all so you can understand their doubts and error when it came to inventory.

One thing that does seem very weird to me though, K4 sales were not as great as expected and yet it took about 6 months for the touch version to be released outside of north america.

As far as the $50 Kindle, it might be further away than people expect, they may not drop the price that much when the new ones come out and just find more creative ways to get them into more people's hands than just dropping the price that puts more of an onus on them being sold to people who will buy enough for them to make it worthwhile.
