all eyestrain is not equal. i've tried several CRT and LCD monitors, have added indirect lighting to my work area so my monitors are 100% glare-free, got special computer glasses, etc, etc. both my optomistrist and my ophthalmologist agree that in my case looking at a backlit screen causes my eyestrain. since i also get eyestrain reading books in very well lit rooms, i guess i'm just light sensitive.

It looks like the real problem may be habits of the user and vanity in not wearing glasses is a contributer (reading between the lines). Neither backlight or refresh seem to be a factor except when refresh and florescent lights clash.
