They were bought from the Kobo store. They come down as small ascm files. When I select them from the Kobo library in the Kobo desktop app, Calibre opens them by opening an Adobe Digital Editions window and I can read them on the pc. However, when I try in Calibre to see them on the Kobo Vox itself by clicking on the device icon, nothing happens. Calibre can detect that the device is plugged in OK. The device icon pops up as soon as I plug the Vox in and set it to USB storage mode. But, clicking that device icon does nothing.
Since I asked the question, I have tried to see the contents of a Kobo Touch. Calibre can see that fine. So it seems to be that Calibre is not compatible with the newer Kobo Vox.
