I had a similar problem with Linux because of the way Calibre moves the books around. The books are all copied to a temporary directory and then they are all copied from the temporary directory to the new location. I had to format a new 15GB partition and use the partition as a tmp directory. Calibre is the only program that has ever overloaded my ~700MB tmpfs tmp directory.

EDIT2: I wonder if Calibre is overloading your temp directory when you edit the details and the temp directory is causing your disk overload. That is what caused my IO ERROR and that looked the same as yours.
