Without the light on, it looks nice and contrasty; so the washed out look is probably from the cameras not dealing well with two disparate light levels.
I pull up a view of the original ST for comparison, the source is B&N advertisement.


But it is a lie...or at least a contract-enhanced truth. When I compare to my real-life version to that in the ad, the contract is nowhere near as good. **But it is better than the image you provided of the glownook**.

I guess only a real-life side-by-side is going to answer whether the trade off, if there really is one, is worth it.
