I tried hn333's "de-registering" suggestion. Unfortunately when I re-registered, all the "favorites" were gone. Had to redo that whole thing. Also all Amazon books were removed from the Fire. Of course, they are still in the "cloud archive" but needed to be re-downloaded. Sure enough there was cover art. But the solution seems a bit draconian.
