My friends just called telling me they're going to pick up their new dog, Luca, on Sunday. Lyca, who I always looked after when they're away died a couple of months ago. Around the same time their son was diagnosed with an allergy for pets, mostly for cats but also for dogs. Their going to "try out" Luca for a week to see how their son reacts to it and to see if it clicks.

Personally I wouldn't have gotten a dog this time of year; from April until September when the weather is nice they're going to the camping (no dogs allowed) during the weekends. And in the summer holiday their going away for three weeks. If I would get a new dog I would do so in a period when I'm at home for a longer period of time. Mind you, I don't mind looking after a new dog but it might be a bit confusing for Luca. Chances are that I'm going to look after him/her next (bank holiday) weekend.

Hopefully Luca is as nice as Lyca, though a bit less bark-y would be nice.
