The screens are the same. The first-gen Kindle did have a slightly darker screen, and although the device was white I eventually got used to it. But when I ordered my K3, I ordered the black (actually, charcoal grey) one because of the greater contrast between the bezel and the screen.

However, I find that with LCD screens, a white bezel isn't so much of a problem, probably because of the backlighting. I have a white iPhone and have never found it difficult to read.
