I don't see a way to verify the origin of the firmware image... a forum is open to anyone... *shrug* As Booxtor mentioned, it is possible to add files to the archive. I thereby assume that it would be possible to override some contents of the archive... In this case basically everyone could just take e.g., an old 1.6 fw image (with unsatisfying calibration), add some files and label it 1.7 RC whatever. (Did someone check how easy it is to modify the 'about' information with - say - a hex editor?)
Short of Booxtor and the official Onyx _website_ (not forum), I don't see trustworthy sources... and the fun part is that probably most users wouldn't even notice malware running in the background
