I do the same thing.

I have an HP desktop bought in 2007 and I love it. I have put in a new power supply, video card, a couple of extra backup hard drives (one I can pull out of the front of the computer to grab in an emergency), replaced the original drive with an SSD card (best upgrade I ever did), replaced the DVD drive.....etc., etc.
It has one of those personal media drive slots so I have about three of those.
I plan to keep it until the motherboard goes on it. It has a great fast CPU - 7.1 Experience Index. The computer as a whole is 6.9 Experience Index so it's pretty fast.
