But the problem comes in for people who do not format shit. And format shifting is not as easy as you seem to think. I've converted a lot of Mobipocket format eBooks and some have needed a good deal of work to clean them up so they look good. It's not always a case of just convert and read. It doesn't work that way. You want to have eBooks that looks good and if it doesn't, there can be a lot of work involved as the underlying code for a Mobipocket eBook can be atrocious. I'm not saying that all ePub are wonderful. But most ePub I've looked at (not from Smashwords) are either fairly easy to deal with or not too much of a mess.
Another question arises... what if we wait the 90-days for the eBooks we want to come out of KDP select and they don't? What then? That's the problem. We don't know what's going to happen after the 90-days. Basically, KDP select is taking a lot of eBooks away from readers.
