Time to throw in the towel I think. I've scoured the xda-dev forums, read guides, followed instructions and attempted to root using SuperOneClick, DoomLord v4 and Flashtool, all of which should handle Android 2.3.4 on Xperia Arc, but entirely without success.
Bugger, bugger, bugger.
