Quite different from here then. I'm sure the majority buy their phone with a contract here too, spreading the cost over time, but lots of people buy just a phone. I always (always probably gives the wrong impression, seeing as I bought my previous phone 5 years ago...) buy just the phone, since I've no great interest in ending up paying much, much more than the actual cost of just the device.
Just as a FYI, the iPhone 4 (non-S), 8GB, on its own, will set you back roughly $800 here. In comparison, my Xperia Arc came in at $400.
