I think that, if cognitive challenges are the big advantage, classics are generally better than modern works. English usage was quite different in the past, and many word definitions were subtly different. Getting the gist of the writing takes more effort and practice for the classics. But, like solving crossword puzzles, that's not everyone's cup of tea.
