It's rather sad that supposedly professional academics who really ought to know better would resort to such. But then, Stephen E. Ambrose plagiarized for decades, and Orlando Figes claims his wife wrote all those Amazon reviews savaging his rivals' books and praising his own (but at least he didn't tamper with documents and use other people's words uncredited, which is like a teeny-tiny bit of redemption from the overall fail).
And somewhere on the internet, there's a really funny slapfight between two string theorists which involved one of them accusing the other of offering to pay $20 to strangers for writing 1-star online reviews of the other latest book. But it's on a site I can't link to because of a family-unfriendly word in the domain name.
