Transfering Books has Nothing to do with Collections.

With the device connected, you should see a new ('Device') icon (or 2, depending on model)
Click that. You should see a lit of books on your device (it may take a few minutes, the task wheel usually needs to stop).
Select books you want to add: right-click: Select Add to Library
