You're welcome.

And what about default formats; Kindle is mobi ? What is Sony? epub? I've never looked into that!

Yes, Amazon/Kindle is mobi, all the others (Kobo, Sony, Nook) are epub. Usually Adobe epub, which means you unlock them with Adobe Digital Editions, which you should already be familiar with from downloading to your computer from Kobo (unless you've only been downloading directly to the device). Since calibre can convert from epub to mobi and vice versa with a click of the convert icon (once DRM is gone), it's possible to obtain books in either format and put them on the reader of your choice.

So that brings me to another question, I've only ever downloaded from Chapters [kobo] or one of the free sites. So I'm wondering how the software and stores for Kindle and Sony compare. Is one easier? better? cheaper?

Disclaimer: this is my personal opinion. Listing from worst to first: the Sony reader store is kinda crappy, Google Play (another place you can buy epubs) is awkward, Barnes & Noble won't sell to Canadians so [language edit], Kobo is the best epub option (and the discount codes keep the prices reasonable), but they all pale in comparison to Amazon. The searches and "other buyers bought this" hints and bestseller lists by genre or price and reviews and deals and freebies and price matching and apps so you can read your ebooks on a million devices are all valuable things Amazon brings to the table, plus their one-click purchase is hassle free.
