I can't speak for the Kindle, but I can say that my Sony PRS-T1 has a much better screen contrast than the Nook STs that I own which makes for a much more comfortable read in a wider range of lighting.

Kindle may be as good as the Sony, maybe someone with both could weigh in on that aspect.
