You might like to take a look at the Sony PRS-T1. It can certainly use cards up to 32GB (I suspect it won't support SDXC cards, though), and has very good capabilities as far as zooming goes.
Sorry, but I honestly think you're out of luck as far as being able to use your expensive card goes. Perhaps the place you bought it from would allow you to exchange it for a 32GB SDHC card?

Thats unfortunate would have liked to use it does the Sony PRS support music? Also, what about this Iriver Story HD I have heard about?
