I read it many years ago, but I'm fairly certain I read the older novella version rather than the full-length novel offered by Amazon, as I read it as part of an anthology. It was definitely an excellent story, truly heartbreaking as described above. I've now purchased the full-length novel from Amazon, and it's now on my Kindle for future reading.
