The Horus Hersy gets a bit 'meh' by book 7 or 8, so I would recommend the following to new readers:
Space Wolf Omnibus - describes the making of a space marine and is really accessible for newbies.
Gaunt's Ghosts series by Dan Abnett - get the omnibuses cheap used ('The Founding' first I think).
Any of the short story anthologies eg 'heroes of the space marines', 'fear the alien'. Just use Amazon to find what others have purchased with this kind of title.
Eisenhorn Onmibus by Dan Abnett - can't go wrong with DA. Stories about a psychic Inquisitor fighting the forces of chaos.
Imperial Guard series - generally excellent military scifi.

It's generally a fair bet that whatever you pick up will be a decent read. The only BL author I really dislike is Henry Zou (Bastion Wars series). It's all to do with how much background knowledge you have. You probably know enough from reading this thread to get you through any of the above recommendations to be honest.
